Wood Flooring Advice

IS WOOD FLOORING SUITABLE FOR A KITCHEN?

These days fewer and fewer kitchens are separate rooms designed just for cooking. Increasingly they are very much the hub of modern homes, part of inclusive open plan spaces that combine cooking, eating and living areas. This has led to a real rethink about the best kitchen flooring and wood flooring being an increasingly popular choice.

IS WOOD FLOORING SUITABLE FOR A KITCHEN?

In this context we are often asked whether wood flooring is suitable for a kitchen, as many customers have previously only used tile, stone or vinyl as kitchen floors. They like the idea of wood flooring for its warmth and style but worry about whether it will be a practical choice. We are pleased to reassure them that all Broadleaf wood flooring is sealed with hard wearing, high performance finishes that are designed to withstand commercial traffic, so there is no problem using them in a busy family kitchen. Now this doesn’t mean that they are bomb proof, or that they won’t need any maintenance, but it does mean that with a little care they will wear well and stay looking good for years to come. Now obviously, some of our wood flooring will be a better choice for a busy kitchen than others in terms of not showing the dirt and more forgiving in terms of wear and tear, so we would always recommend you think about how you use the room, and how much looking after you really want to do before making your choice.

Our Extra Wide Raven Oak flooring looks absolutely stunning in this beautiful Poggenpohl by Porsche kitchen, but might not be the best choice for a busy family kitchen with lots of cooking going on every day and muddy wellies running back and forth across it. This isn’t because it wouldn’t stand up to it – the durable hardwax oil finish would happily take the wear, but as a dark floor with minimal variation it would show up crumbs, dust and footprints instantly. Our Nuances Dark Oak flooring has a similar inky tone, but it is much less intense, and would be much more forgiving in terms of how often it looked like it needed cleaning. One step further would be our Dark Oak Vintage Parquet flooring, whose gentle authentically worn style hides even more temporary housekeeping sins !
