Oak Plank Fire Doors

Broadleaf Oak Plank Fire Doors are traditionally hand built in our workshops here in Wales from sustainably sourced solid French Oak.

They are available in a choice of Cottage or Elegance Oak grade timber. Our Cottage Oak grade features larger knots as well as richer colour variation and creates more traditional, rustic looking doors.  Our Elegance Oak grade features smaller knots and creates doors with a more contemporary country feel.

Broadleaf Oak Plank Fire Doors are made to measure as standard – there is no price supplement for bespoke sizes. They can be made in any size up to 840mm x 2085mm, and are built using two sets of solid oak planks with a discreet intumescent core sandwiched between. Each plank has an attractive bead and butt detail along the edge on the front and a simple bevel on the rear.

Like our other oak plank doors, fire doors have 3 horizontal ledges on the rear that are chamfered along the edges and fixed with screws covered with discreet oak plugs.

Unlike many suppliers we expertly hand fill any knots in our Oak Plank Fire Doors and then carefully sand them ready to finish. This adds a little to the cost but saves significant time, effort and disruption at installation stage. We also offer a range of beautiful workshop finishes which can be ordered as an extra.

Broadleaf Oak Plank Fire Doors are designed to be fitted with tradtional “T” or strap hinges (see below) and whichever side these are fitted to will be the one that opens towards you. This in turn will impact how your door is made.

Doors that are to be hinged on the face will be made with ledges that finish slightly short of the edge of the door (stopped ledges) to accommodate the door stop they will close against. Doors that are to be hinged on the rear will be made with ledges that run through to the edges of the door (thru ledges) so that there isn’t an ugly gap under the end of the hinge and the hinge is fully supported.

We normally finish our Oak Plank Fire Doors with decorative handforged nails fixed through the face in line with the ledges, but these can be omitted for a simpler, more contemporary look if you prefer. You will need to request this when you order and it will be marked on your invoice.

We can also supply diagonal braces for our fire doors as an extra if you wish, but these are not needed for stability.

Normally, in order to achieve an FD30 rating, our Oak Plank Fire Doors will need to be fitted into our Oak Door Liners with smoke seals or an alternative FD30 rated door liner.

Broadleaf Oak Plank Fire Doors are all made to measure and we recommend that measurements are taken by whoever is going to fit the door to avoid the need for onsite adjustments.

Bear in mind that measurements will need to take account of any floor coverings, although these may not always be present when the measurements are taken.

Measurements for each size of door ordered will be shown on your invoice.

Broadleaf Oak Plank Fire Doors should be fitted with our traditional style 18″  T hinges. These will need to be cut into the architrave and fixed to the face of the door that you want to open towards you. Due to their weight they should be hung on 3 hinges (one fixed to each ledge).

Due to the design of traditional ‘T’ hinges, the side of the door that the hinges are to be fixed to will open towards you.

Doors which are to be hinged on the face should be ordered with Stopped Ledges. Doors which are to be hinged on the rear should be ordered with Thru Ledges and will be supplied with a matching chamfered door block to take the latch. It is possible to hang Stopped Ledge doors with hinges fixed to the face or the rear, but if they are fixed to the rear there will be a gap at the edge of the door under the hinge, which is less attractive and puts additional pressure on the hinge as the door swings.

Oak Plank Fire Doors are typically closed using a traditional Suffolk or Cottage latch. To fix a Suffolk latch you will need to cut a slot of approx 6mm x 25mm in the door for the thumb latch element to pass through and pivot. The ‘staple’ is then tapped through the door and the sharp ends knocked back against the timber on the other side or pinched off.

Normally, in order to achieve an FD30 rating, our Oak Plank Fire Doors will need to be fitted  into our Oak Door Liners with smoke seals or an equivalent FD30 rated door liner.

Broadleaf Oak Plank Fire Doors are designed for internal use only and should not be used outside or in any doorway exposed to the exterior.

Prior to installation, our Oak Plank Fire Doors should always be stored flat, and raised off the floor with blocks or another suitable support that will not damage them. They must be stored in a room with normal living conditions – sealed, dry, free from damp, heated and within the following scope:

Temperature: 15 – 24 degrees centigrade

Relative Humidity: 40 – 65%

The must not be stored outside or in any other damp or unheated environment (such as a garage).

Our Oak Plank Fire Doors will normally need to be fitted into our Oak Door Liners with Smoke Seals to achieve their FD30 rating. These are made from solid oak and have an intumescent backed smoke seal rebated into them. This is positioned to align with the door once closed, so will be located differently for Thru and Stopped Ledge doors.

Standard Oak Door Liners with Smoke Seals are 132mm wide and are made from single pieces of solid oak.

Made-to-measure Oak Door Liners with Smoke Seals are available in any width up to 800mm. Depending on width these may be made from a single piece of oak or multiple lengths, glued side by side for stability.

All of our door liners are un-notched and come complete with solid oak door stops.

Oak Door liners with Smoke Seals are 28mm thick.

Oak Door Liners should only be fitted after plastering is complete and fully dry as wet plaster is likely to warp them and will react with the tannin in the oak and turn them purple. To create a flat edge against which to plaster, use waste timber set the correct distance back to accommodate the oak liner once the plaster is fully dry.

Our door liners should be fixed using suitable screws in the line of the door stops so that once fitted these will cover them.

Our Oak Plank Fire Doors are supplied carefully sanded,  with any open knots expertly filled. This saves significant time, effort and mess at installation stage.

We recommend Broadleaf Hardwax Oil which to finish them. It is available in a choice of beautiful shades and creates a durable, natural looking finish that shows off all of the beauty of the Oak beneath.

If you prefer, you can order your doors fully finished and we can apply a hardwax oil finish in our workshops.
