Under-floor Heating cont'd
4) Acclimatise timber as normal
Once the heat has been switched on for the required period (and not before), the timber must be stored for a further 7 - 14 days week in the room where it is to be fitted (or one with simmilar environmental conditions) so that it can acclimatise.
It is important that boards are stacked to facilitate airflow around them – criss cross fashion is ideal. If all of the boards are tightly packed, only the outer boards will acclimatise.
5) Fitting the floor - a range of fitting options are available, as noted below: Please refer to product specifications, our brochure, or ask staff for confirmation of which method of fixing suits which Broadleaf products.
To secret nail boards over a water system set in screed you will either need to set battens into the screed when this is cast, or overlay the screed with 18mm tongue & grooved ply. Inset battens will need to be notched at the end to allow the pipe to run across the floor and must sit at least as high as the surface of the screed. To secret nail boards over a water system set between joists or an electric system you will first need to overlay these with 18mm tongue & grooved ply.
To glue boards over a water system set in screed use Sika T54. For parquet, Bona R850 is recommended. Parquet will need to be left for 3 weeks after fixing for any settling movement before being filled, sanded and finished as normal. To glue boards or parquet over a water system set between joists or an electric system you will first need to overlay these with 18mm tongue & grooved ply.
Where a water system is set over a floating timber subfloor, first overlay this with 18mm tongue & grooved ply then secret nail with 38mm portanails, glue or float flooring as normal, noting the additional step for parquet detailed above.
Strata boards can also be floated over a concrete or ply subfloor over under-floor heating as normal.
NOTE: If you are overlaying with 18mm ply, and this is not part of the standard construction recommended by your under-floor heating supplier you should make them aware of this.
6) Running the heating
The night before installation, the heating should be turned down so that it is not heating the screed and left like this whiile the floor is fitted. Once fitting is complete, the thermostat temperature should be increased by one degree per day until normal running temperature is achieved.
