Quantities

Calculating how much timber you need is a fairly straightforward process.

First, measure your room with a metric tape.To get the area you require in m2, multiply the length by the width. and then allow a small percentage for wastage (see below)

If your room is not square, you may find it easier to measure it in sections (see Fig 1) and then total these.

The waste factor is necessary to accommodate ‘off square’ walls, and to allow for the fact that the room is never an exact multiple of boards in terms of width and length - as well as the odd miscut!

The exact waste factor needed will depend on both the quality of the product you choose and how you lay it, but the figures in the following table should give you a good guide.

Single Width
Mixed Width
 Non Ends Matched Boards
10%
15%
 Unfinished Rustic Grade  Boards
8%
10%
 Broadleaf Plank Products
5%
8%

If you are planning to fit the floor yourself and have not done this before, you may wish to err on the more generous side of these figures !

Parquet floors will always need a minimum of 10% wastage allowance, and maybe more for complicated patterns. Ask your supplier for advice on this.
