• English Elm should be secret nailed to joists, batons or an existing timber subfloor. It is not suitable for glue fixing.
• All boards over 6" should then be face fixed - the most common method is to use screws and then plugs cut out of waste. These are then cut flish with the top surface of the floor before sanding.
For further details on these fixing methods and more general fitting information see " Wood Floor Want To Know More? ".
• After fitting, knots will need to be filled using a celluose based filler. These are available pre-mixed, but if you wish you can belt sand the boards with 60 grit paper and use the sawdust to mix with a cellulose base product like Bonakemi Parkettgrund to create your own.
• Once the knots are filled, finish sand with 80 grit followed by a 120 grit paper before sealing.
• Ideally, we would suggest that a upright continuous belt sander (not a disc or flat bed sander) is used to sand Barn Oak prior to filling. These can be rented from all good tool hire shops. Alternatively, a hand held belt sander may be used, but this is much harder work and may be less effective. For the finishing sand, use a triple disc sander or a hand held belt sander.
• Elm is ideally suited to a traditional hardwax oil finish or alternatively a very matt lacquer such as Bonakemi Traffic.
